RT 2010- aka Kate Douglas Likes My Ass

Gotcha, huh? We’ll get to the Kate Douglas part in a bit, but I wanted to give a recap of my RT adventure.

I had been planning to blog while I was at RT, as i have for the past 3 years but I honestly didn’t have time (nor internet–why do the hotels have to charge us $10/day for internet? I know, because they can, but ever since I got my baby Jennifer, I can check my email without paying that).

So here are the pictures. And I’ll apologize in advance for the lack of them. It really was a whirlwind week.

Cover model Jimmy Thomas. Sadly, I had to leave on Saturday before he did his cover shoot workshop. Luckily, I got the chance for my own photo shoot with him on Wednesday.

Mary Janice Davidson and Charlaine Harris carried on with their workshop even though Jim Butcher’s plane had him stuck in Chicago. A definite comedy show not to be missed.

Sabrina Jeffries is a hoot! If you ever get the chance to have a chat with her, I highly recommend it.

An Ohio Wombatogether: Pat and Sia. We spent the night at Pat’s house, and, honestly, it was too short!!

Wombat and blogger extraordinaire, Sia McKye, and my critique partner, Stephanie Julian, dressed for the vampire ball.

Jim Butcher signing at the e–book expo

I like seeing my name on the same box as these two. :)

I was so pleasantly surprised at the people who brought my books in for me to sign them, and for all the people who stopped by to pick up any/all of my Mer series.

and here’s one of them, Jill Fazio

Now to the part about Kate Douglas, who is a wonderful lady. And funny!! A joy to have lunch with.

So, a few days after our lunch and running into each other during the conference, I was sitting in the bar (ooh, big surprise, I know), with my back to the meeting rooms lobby, when Kate walks up behind me and says, “I knew that was you. I recognized your ass.”

um… ok??? That’s one I haven’t heard. I normally get, “I recognized you from your hair,” so I’m prepared for that. But my ass???? LOL.

And then she proceeds to tell me it’s a nice ass.

Thank you, Kate. :)  As I told you in our emails, though, I’ll trade you my ass for your build. :)

Ah, the friends you make at conferences – and the bonds you share. :)

And the winner is…

Thanks to everyone who stopped by and commented on the RT blog posts. I promised one of you a mermaid cell phone charm and by the convoluted and highly technical random selection method (“Honey, pick a number between 1 and X…”), the winner is:

Kathryn Esplin-Oleski!

She’s a buddy from Gather and it was great to see her win.

Enjoy the mermaid, Kathryn!

RT – Authors Galore!

These are pictures from the Book Fair. Sadly, we had to leave immediately afterwards to begin the 15 hour journey home, so I don’t have any Mr. Romance pictures, but I’m sure you can see a few of them in the photos.

RT Convention – More Cover Models and Authors

Today was a whirlwind from club RT first thing in the morning – thanks to Steph Kwan and the others for stopping by – to the fun session with Judi McCoy, Dakota Cassidy, Mark Henry and others about humor in paranormals, to chatting with my editor and my very first panel – which, thanks to Catherine Mann’s great suggestion ended up in the outside cabana with our attendees, the day was packed. Luckily, I did manage to have my camera with me when Jimmy Thomas, who will be doing a cover shoot on Saturday, as well as raffle off breakfast in bed for one lucky winner, grabbed me for a photo:

And here’s my next mode of transportation:

This should come as no surprise to those who know me.

And so ends another fun, busy, entertaining, busy, informative, and did I mention busy day at the Romantic Times Convention.

Wonder what tomorrow will hold…

RT – Castles in the Sand

I may move to Florida.

Yes, this is  a major departure for me. For those of you who know me, you know how much I hate: A)heat, B)sweating and C)bugs. Florida has all three.

But if I could live here, I might change my mind.

My friend who lives here says tht this place was  built by a businessman for he and his wife. The guest house is here:

cimg44431 check out those stairs:

and here’s where we’re staying:

Of course I had to go to the beach. This is similar to the setting for book 3, Catch of  a Lifetime:

And don’t forget to leave a comment to have a chance to win a mermaid cell phone charm and if you have a friend comment AND leave your name, you’ll have more chances to win.

Romantic Times Convention 2009 – It’s That Time Again! AND a Contest!

It’s the day before I leave for the Romantic Times Convention (not that I’m counting down the hours or anything…) and things are crazy. Working on the manuscript before I go, getting the promo ready, lining up my group blogs before I go, packing…

Why do we do this? Because there’s nothing like the energy of getting a thousand or two readers together with their favorite authors at a gorgeous resort with cover models. Really. Nothing like it.

I’ll be blogging about it as much as possible, and will toss in a few photos, so if you can’t make it this year, or are wondering what all the hoopla is about, check back during the week.

Yet Another Contest!

I’ll be raffling off one of my mermaid cell phone charms again to one of the commenters for the week. So comment often – one comment = one chance

(Notemermaid-cell-phone-charm2: no one-word series of comments, aka “Doing a Dana” in the Wombat world, please. I reserve the right to count simultaneous comments as one.)

AND – if you get your friends to come comment AND they leave your name, then you BOTH get an entry.

Be sure to leave your email address, and, yes, comments starting today count.

And just to whet your appetite for the convention blog:

First Official: I’m a Panelist!

Since this journey is all so new and exciting and fun and unknown, I thought I’d start chronicling all the firsts. I’m going to go back and rename some previous posts and re-categorize them under the First Official tags, but in the meantime, enjoy this offering:

My First Official time as a panelist on an industry panel.

Along with Leanne Banks, Catherine Mann, Beth Ciotta and Traci Hall, I’ll be presenting a workshop at the Romantic Times Convention in Orlando.

How to use setting, dialogue, new technology, places, events and other contemporary cultural points of reference to establish a “now” feel for your novel, appealing to readers of all ages while keeping it timeless for generations to come.

Since I write contemporary paranormals with lots of cultural references and plays off the “real” world, I figure this ought to be fun.

So now I’m getting my promo cap on and trying to come up with some ideas to get the word out about In Over Her Head since, sadly, the book won’t be available for the convention (but will shortly afterward). I do have a cute giveaway for some lucky attendee: a mermaid cell phone charm, just like the one on my cellphone:

Bus, Train and Automobiles – My 2009 Conference Schedule

And not an airplane in sight this year. That’ll seem weird.

I just posted a comment at Deb Maher’s blog about Nationals in DC (driving) – I cannot wait!! First of all, I’m always excited for National, and second, this one will be the first one I’m signing at. Talk about a rush! My book will have been out for a month, so I’m hoping people will have read it and stop by to let me know how they liked it. (I’ve already gotten a review, so that was cool!)

I love getting together with friends from around the country – and the world (shout out to Tracey in Oz and Helen, Evonne & Lynne across the pond).

Writing conferences energize me. I know some people get exhausted, but I love them. I thrive on the energy, the bustle, the constant go. Oh, don’t get me wrong; you don’t have to constantly be on the go. There’s plenty of time for downtime; I just choose not to find it. :)

I’m also heading to NY for the PASIC Conference (bus) – my first one. Again, I’m really looking forward to it – especially hanging out with my roomies! I’m told this conference is a blast and my agent’s going to be there, a Wombat or two, so it should be great.

Then, of course, there’s the annual trek to the Romantic Times Convention. This year it’s in Orlando and Steph and I are rediscovering our PSU roots – we’re going on a road trip to Orlando! She’ll have her Sirius radio and I’ll have my Combos (original flavor) and off we go!

In June comes the Long Island Luncheon (car, train, train, taxi) – an event near and dear to my heart. The ladies there do a wonderful job with the luncheon and industry personnel – that event helped me sell my Mer trilogy last year, so you can bet I’ll be back!

So, as I sit here putting the finishing touches on Wild Blue Under, I’m already planning the costumes at RT, promotion for In Over Her Head, (mentally working on Catch of a Lifetime), I’m getting really excited. So who else is going???
